Fall Season Wrap-up

2018 Fall Summary

Saturday Soccer:
The last session of Saturday Soccer was November 3rd.  In total 89 players were registered with NCYSA as recreation players for our PCC Saturday Soccer Outreach program.  A total of 28 sessions were held in 2018.  The final session of the year also consisted of a friendly event with Westover Church.  A group of our boys went to play with a group that plays pickup at Westover Church.  The group played mixed games for an hour and then enjoyed lunch.

Recreation Teams:
This Fall a high school boys team comprised of 20 boys competed in the GUSA recreation league.  There were an average of 16 boys per game and the boys competed at Bryan Park, Jefferson Elementary and PCC hosted two matches.  The team was coached by Sari and training was held on Thursdays throughout the Fall.  This team also entered the Clash Tournament along with a second team comprised of players from Saturday Soccer and the Westover Church group. A group of six high school girls also helped create a high school girls team with GUSA recreation players.

Soccer and Studies:
Early Smith is the site director for the PCC Soccer and Studies program that runs on Mondays and Wednesdays.  This Fall was a difficult Fall for the program as school was cancelled due to the Hurricanes and snowstorms.  We held 19 sessions with the kids and then provided food and gifts in lieu of the end of year party.  Early was fantastic at helping with adjustments and the kids participated in a field trip to UNCG to assist with a research study.  Zaxby’s on Gate City Blvd also hosted a tutoring session and provided dinner.  Tutors were provided by UNCG including ones from the Kinesiology, Nutrition and athletic departments.

Afterschool Soccer:
This Fall we ran one session a week at the Boys and Girls Club at their Caldcleugh Cultural Arts Center.  We were contracted by Community in Schools to run programs one day a week at Archer Elementary, Bessemer Elementary and Wiley Elementary.  Community in Schools sessions were held twice a week at Jackson Middle School and Rankin Elementary School.  We are continuing programs at all those schools this spring and will add Washington and Hairston to that contract.  This November we also partnered with the Doris Henderson Newcomer School to run sessions every Wednesday from November through May.  We are currently working with 40 middle school students and plan to work with the high school students in March and creating a recreation team or 2 from those players.  In total 53 sessions were conducted this Fall.

Coaching  Education Course:
In September we were able to offer a free US Soccer Grassroots 4v4 course to our coaches and volunteers.  We had 12 participants in the course including two of our high school volunteers.  The course normally costs $45, but was waived as part of an agreement with NCYSA.

Youth Leaders Corp/Project Effort:
This Fall YLC was held on Thursdays and Fridays at UNCG starting the first week of October.  The Thursday session was comprised of leaders from the UNCG Middle College.  The leaders ran the Project Effort sports club which consisted of children from the Reynolds Boys and Girls Club on Thursday.  On Fridays 17 kids from our PCC Soccer and Studies program attended Project Effort at UNCG.  The other Friday Project Effort participants were two rotating groups of 12-15 students from the Center for New North Carolinian programs. The Friday Youth Leaders Corp had 13 leaders including 8 from the Foundation's soccer programs and 5 from the UNCG Middle College.
