Foundation Receives Grant

The Greensboro United Soccer Foundation would like to thank First Lutheran Church (FLC) for selecting us as a 2019 Endowment Fund Grant recipient. The Endowment Fund was established by FLC to provide members and friends a special opportunity to support the long-term welfare of the church and its outreach programs. FLC has provided over $250,000 to support ministry and mission in Guilford County and beyond. This is the second year that FLC has supported the Soccer Foundation and our outreach efforts in East Greensboro at Presbyterian Church of the Cross (PCC). As a result of their support, the programs at PCC have expanded beyond just soccer and now support a vibrant tutoring and enrichment program that provides nutritional meals for underserved youth in the area.

For more than 6 years Saturday Soccer at PCC has been a safe place for local youth to play soccer and receive a hearty meal on the weekends.  Located in one of 14 food deserts in Greensboro the children in East Greensboro struggle not only with food scarcity, but gang violence and low academic achievement.  Many of our children attend Cone Elementary School, which has one of the lowest EOG reading scores in the area.  Given these struggles, the Soccer Foundation stepped up three years ago to establish the Soccer and Studies program that is held on Mondays and Wednesdays.  We also extended our partnership with UNCG so that children from Claremont Homes could attend the Project Effort Sports Club on Fridays.  This now means that 20 or more of our Saturday Soccer kids are receiving academic support, increased meals and greater weekly exposure to positive role models in the community.

Soccer and Studies is a two, hour bi-weekly program where high school and college volunteers provide academic support and mentorship for our PCC Outreach kids.  When it was first begun the idea was to provide academic support and safe place for kids to play after school.  A small snack was given to kids following each session. Now with the support of FLC that small snack has become a well-balanced nutritional meal. Each week the children help to prepare and cook the meal, set the table, serve and clean up.  This mealtime has proven incredibly valuable as an opportunity for kids to learn about servant leadership and building community.  We are truly grateful to FLC for their continued support and commitment to helping children in the community.
