Project Effort Youth Leadership Corps

Started over 20 years ago by Tom Martinek, Project Effort provides various programs with the intent of staying with the child from elementary through high school and beyond. Each week sports clubs are held for elementary and middle school aged children from the communities served by the Center for New North Carolinians and the African American Male Initiative. The programs’ curriculum is based on the Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility model. Children are encouraged to participate in a variety of child center activities that work to engage kids to develop effort, respect, self-direction, and helping others. The goal is to empower these children to become leaders at school, at home and in their community.

Once children enter high school they are able to join the Youth Leadership Corps (YLC), which trains and mentors them to become leaders for the elementary and middle school programs. Each session YLC members create their own activity lesson plans, lead activities and then reflect on their leadership experiences. YLC members also attend dinner on the campus of the University of North Carolina Greensboro following each session. In this way, YLC members experience a university setting and become exposed to academic opportunities beyond high school.
